About us

Why ‘Lost Souls Monologues’?

A few years ago, Matt wrote a handful of monologues. They were the basis of a stage show he was writing, loosely based around the idea that all people are lost in some way. It then occurred to him that the play had great potential as an audio piece, so he set about planning that. It didn’t take him long to realise that the appetite for a multi-character one man show with a single actor on a podcast might not garner much of an audience. What if he were to ask other writers to join?

He took the idea to Caitlin and ‘Lost Souls Monologues’ was born.

When we conceived the idea and made the call to writers, we anticipated a few dozen entries that we would read our way through over a few weeks, agree on twenty and then set about recording them with some actor friends. When six hundred monologues were submitted to us from around the world, our simple little model shattered. Over the course of many months, we made our way through these wonderful submissions. Every monologue was read, in its entirety, at least once and discussed at length within the team.

Non-selection wasn’t a comment on the quality of the work; it was a combination of how our readers felt the piece spoke to the theme and how it would fit with the other monologues in the series. The final pieces you hear on the podcast reflect the high standard and diversity of the submissions we received.

Ultimately, our aims were to showcase stories and voices that perhaps aren’t always heard, to create something in a low-pressure environment, and to try something new and interesting. We hope you enjoy listening to them as much as we’ve enjoyed recording them.

Acknowledgements

We would like to thank the writers, actors and directors for their wonderful work on this. They have all been very patient and encouraging – and we’re so humbled at the sheer creativity that they have thrown at this project.

We must thank our wonderful group of life-saving readers. Without them, Caitlin and Matt would still be reading through the entries and the actual podcast would be a very distant, hazy dream. They are, in no particular order, Julian Poidevin, Tamar Karabetyan, Charlie Rollo-Walker, Tom Hawkes, Liam Shea, Mark James, Matt Morrow and Jake Hassam.

We have been bowled over by the generosity of spirit shown by everyone involved in this project. It started out as a small idea, but the heart shown by all our creatives has turned it into a hugely gratifying experience.
